UAE e-invoicing: what SMEs actually have to do before July 2027

PDF invoices stop being valid tax invoices. The work starts with your accounting system, not your accountant.

What is changing

The UAE is moving business-to-business and business-to-government invoicing to structured electronic invoices, exchanged through accredited service providers on a Peppol-based network. Once your business is in scope, a PDF emailed to a customer no longer counts as a valid tax invoice.

The invoice data goes from your system to your provider, then to your customer's provider, and a copy is reported to the Federal Tax Authority. Nobody retypes anything.

02

When it applies to you

The rollout is phased, with larger businesses first and smaller businesses expected to be live by July 2027. The Ministry of Finance has adjusted dates before, so check the current schedule on its website before you plan around a specific month.

03

What you actually have to do

First, find out whether your accounting or ERP system can produce structured e-invoices, or whether it needs an upgrade or a connector. This is usually the biggest piece of work.

Second, choose an accredited service provider. Third, clean up your customer records: TRNs, legal names and addresses have to be correct, because the network rejects invoices that do not match. Fourth, test with a few real customers well before your deadline.

04

Where it usually goes wrong

Businesses leave it to their accountant, but the accountant cannot change your invoicing software. The work sits with whoever owns your systems, and it takes longer than expected when customer data is messy or invoices are raised in more than one tool.

05

A sensible order

Start with an inventory of every place an invoice is created today. Then pick the system that will become the single source, connect it to a provider, and retire the rest. Doing it in that order avoids paying for a connector on a system you are about to replace.
